PSA Prostate Test

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men. It can often be treated effectively by preventing the cancer from spreading. However, it is important that prostate cancer is detected and treated as early as possible, and regular prostate testing makes it easier to identify the disease before it progresses. The risk of prostate cancer increases with age, meaning older men should generally test at shorter intervals.

A PSA test is a blood test that can be performed at home. The entire process normally takes no more than 15 minutes. Home prostate tests are not 100% accurate but provide indications if something may be wrong with the prostate. If your test shows normal values and you are still concerned, you should contact a doctor.

What does a prostate test measure and what conclusions can be drawn from the result?

A home PSA test measures the PSA level related to your prostate. PSA tests are commonly used to detect possible prostate-related conditions. The test indicates whether your values are normal or elevated and therefore whether you should consult a doctor. A high PSA value does not necessarily indicate disease.

What is PSA?

PSA is a protein found in the prostate. Normal PSA levels vary depending on age. Elevated PSA values may indicate some form of disease, such as prostate cancer, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), age-related conditions, or similar issues. The earlier prostate-related problems are detected, the more effective treatment becomes. PSA also helps increase sperm mobility. Men under 50 years old should generally not have values above 3.0 µg/L in the blood, and a positive test result means that the PSA value is above 4.0 µg/L.
